Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Edinburgh Tour
This Second Level tour has been designed to give your class an exciting and interactive experience around the Old Town locations linked to Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite occupation of Edinburgh in 1745. This tour will last around two hours.  We are currently developing this tour and we are trialling it in March 2019. Tours available Monday-Wednesday and cost £3 per pupil.  Your tour will be led by a qualified primary school teacher.
Learning about Charlie in the locations he knew! We think the best way to learn about the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 is to get your class outside and into the heart of today’s Edinburgh.  There’s something exciting about seeing a class imagine Charlie’s army walking on the same streets the pupils are following on this tour. This Second Level Old Edinburgh tour features; -a safe, compact but historically interesting route -age-appropriate stories -suitably challenging activities which will involve pupils working with partners to analyse historic artefacts and evidence - locations which help tell the story of the 1745 Rebellion

What will the class see and do?

1 - We will meet you at in front of the Museum of Scotland and,

if we can get access to the Museum, we will visit the fashion

exhibition for a quick look at the style of outfits worn by men

and women at the time.  This plays an important part in a laer

story.  We will also introduce the role of women at this time.

Female characters and eyewitness accounts play an important

part in our tour.

2 - We will walk round part of the Flodden Wall and then and

then move to the the site of the nearby Netherbow Port.  We’ll

recreate the ‘attack’ on Edinburgh by Charlie’s army.

2 to 5 - We follow the path of the victorious Jacobites up the

Royal Mile, stopping at various significant places on the way.

We’ll find out how the Jacobites tried to fund their campaign;

we’ll see the close where Flora MacDonald went to school,

where the Jacobite standard was raised in the name of King

James VIII and where, ultimately, the rebellion was shown to be

over.
